4 Homes on Display at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
Each August, all roads in the collector-car world lead to a storied stretch of California’s Central Coast. Their destination: Monterey Car Week. The grand finale arrives on Sunday with the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, celebrating its 75th edition this year. Some of the rarest and most significant automobiles in existence will assemble on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, where judges consider everything from history and originality to technical merit and style.
Of course, admiring the cars is only part of the fun. Those looking to add one (or perhaps more) to their collection can turn to Gooding Christie’s Pebble Beach Auctions at the Parc du Concours on August 14 and 15. Among the headliners on offer: a 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, one of only six created and estimated in excess of $25 million, and a 1963 Ferrari 250 P, the first ever ‘P’ car, estimated between $15 million and $20 million.
Foremost a celebration of the automobile, the event also provides a stage for fine design of another kind. Herewith, Luxury Defined turns from four wheels to four walls, highlighting a selection of exceptional properties from Christie’s International Real Estate affiliates on hand at the festivities. Shall we take a look under the hood?
Modern Mansion in Los Angeles, California
High above Los Angeles in the coveted Bird Streets neighborhood, this newly constructed nine-bedroom residence commands 500 feet of frontage and sweeping views across the canyon and city skyline.
Cascading fountains announce the entrance, leading to a 13-foot-high living room anchored by layered stone fireplaces. Nearby, an Arclinea kitchen adjoins a European-inspired wine room illuminated by a sculptural pendant. Floor-to-ceiling glass panels open the living spaces to expansive terraces and keep the city in constant view.
Outside, an 18-foot sunken fire pit sits alongside a 100-foot infinity pool, 30-person spa, and sand volleyball court, making the most of the property’s hillside position. The primary suite has its own 1,500-square-foot balcony with a Jacuzzi and fire features, dual dressing rooms, and a travertine-clad bathroom with twin soaking tubs facing the panorama.
There is ample space for professional and leisure pursuits, including a command center-style office, screening room, gym, hookah and meditation lounges, and even a shoeshine station.
Lakefront Estate in Glenbrook, Nevada
Water’s Edge is a fitting moniker for this six-bedroom estate in historic Glenbrook, Nevada. Situated on 0.7 acres within the private gates of Shakespeare Ranch, the property claims 70 feet of shoreline on Lake Tahoe, with a pier extending 465 feet into the lake and two private buoys for boating access.
The approximately 4,150-square-foot main residence is designed in a timeless New England architectural style. Exposed-beam ceilings bring character to the light-filled interiors, which showcase views of the water and the surrounding Sierra Nevada.
At the shoreline is a two-story lakefront cabana connected by a wraparound teak deck. The cabana features a lounge and wet bar along with a rooftop viewing deck overlooking Tahoe.
Resort-Caliber Property, Prosper Texas
For the automobile aficionado, a garage need not be hidden away. At this nearly two-acre estate in Prosper, Texas, some 35 miles north of Dallas, the cars become part of the view.
Set behind the gates of The Enclave at Whispering Farms, the five-bedroom residence spans 10,494 square feet on a tree-lined homesite. Inside, 19-foot ceilings establish the proportions of the main living spaces, where expanses of black-framed glass look onto the leafy grounds. Imported stone and custom millwork add further detail, while dual kitchens with commercial-grade equipment are well equipped for hosting large gatherings.
The collector’s garage is the showpiece. A lounge-style game room with a full-service bar is lined with glass overlooking the eight-car garage, turning a prized automobile collection into the backdrop for entertaining. There is designated parking for up to 10 cars on the property.
The estate’s recreational offerings have the breadth of a private resort. A wine-tasting room, media lounge, and fitness facilities are complemented by an infinity-edge pool and spa, terraces, an outdoor kitchen, sport court, and putting green.
Nakoma Residence in Park City, Utah
At this five-bedroom residence in Nakoma, an exclusive enclave in Deer Valley’s Upper Empire Pass, the first ski run of the day begins just beyond the back door. A dedicated ski-prep room opens directly to the patio, with private access to the slopes only steps away.
The 4,841-square-foot residence keeps the alpine setting in sight from indoors. Vaulted wood ceilings and large windows frame mountain views from the living area and the adjacent kitchen with island. The primary bedroom shares the outlook toward the Lady Morgan chairlift, while multiple en suite bedrooms and two custom bunk rooms accommodate guests.
When a break from the slopes is in order, the restaurants, shops, and galleries of Park City’s historic Main Street are just minutes away.
