The meeting with Galina Georgieva is one of those that immerse you in the artistic world of the beautiful. After such a conversation, you transfer to your mind for a long time what you have touched and understood as aesthetic codes. Galia is the owner and chief designer of Elinor Design Studio - Interior Architecture and Design. She studied interior and furniture design at the University of Forestry and Technology in Sofia. In her work as a furniture designer, she realizes the need to unfold the interior as a whole. In search of knowledge and experience in the field of interior architecture and decorative design, Galina went to America. She worked in Los Angeles and then completed her Master's degree in Interior Architecture and Design at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. There he learns to build and transform the inner spaces as a whole organism that is in constant interrelation with man and the environment. Galina Georgieva has carried out projects in the United States and Europe, and the work in Bulgaria holds a special place in her heart with a sense of gratitude and an opportunity to give back. She shares that interior design in this country has come a long way in a positive direction. "Of course, there is still much to be desired, mainly in terms of sustainable design, says Galya. - But the development of interior design is moving forward solidly with the work of many talented designers and professional industry organizations. A designer's main responsibility is to monitor, introduce, and develop new trends. In Bulgaria, we need more intensive penetration and development of sustainable design principles in interiors."
Here are some major trends in design, according to Galya Georgieva:
For years the interior design of homes in our country was limited to the bare necessities. With the changes and the empowerment of society came lavish decoration and the indiscriminate accumulation of furniture. Now it is time to seek harmony. It defines contemporary interior design - man's relationship with himself, with nature, with something higher. That's why the home must be cleared of unnecessary junk, says Galya, quoting one of the most influential 19th-century designers, William Morris: "There should be nothing in your house that you don't find useful or beautiful." Galia adds to the beautiful emotion it brings.
Many subordinate their homes and offices to currents such as feng shui, and ikigai. The main aspects are the free movement of man in space, the flow of natural energies, and the unity of the living space with its surroundings, whether residential or public interior.
It is particularly important now that the materials used in interior design are sourced locally. The idea is not only to preserve nature but that each place and the building built on it vibrate with the energy of its particular environment.
Modern interiors also care about human health. On a global scale, this is a fact and we can be assured of the quality of materials in every aspect of the interior by choosing the eco lines of manufacturers. "On a tighter budget, opt for less but quality, advises Galina. - The fast fashion in furniture, accessories, and materials has gone. Contemporary interiors are unfolding in the fullness of sustainable design and development."
Design is unthinkable without the presence of color in it. Current trends are based on economic, social, and societal processes on micro and macro levels. Designers capture what is happening in the world and express it through the prism of color. In interiors for 2023, colorists have brought in saturated colors, but through the filter of the mundane. They have dipped everything in warm greys to soften the brightness, as in the style of the 1970s.
This is the interior designers' modern take on furnishing. Old furniture has a biography and carries a soul. However, they mustn't clutter the space and block the light in rooms.
Good design tells a story. That's why communication between the designer and the client is important in the work process. "Personal is creating a space that reflects the character and needs of the client, helps their dynamics, says Galya. - Luxury is having a place where you feel yourself and can build on yourself, it has nothing to do with the material anymore." Bathrooms have undergone a big evolution in this respect - from being hygiene rooms, they are now places to relax and recharge. The function of the bathroom has become equal in importance to those of the other spaces in the home, the designer stresses. Above all, modern, sustainable interiors harmonize with the environment, such as natural processes, and the people in it. It reflects the inner human world and the need to bring back the faded connection with nature. The design today is a searchand connecting.
